Understanding the Editorial Process
- The submission is received by Artistic Director, and is then forwarded
to a First Reader;
- The First Reader reads the submission closely and carefully and comments
on it, assigns the piece a status, which is to say, he/she recommends
acceptance or rejection. After assigning the status, the First Reader
forwards the submission back to the Artistic Director;
- The Artistic Director forwards the submission to Second Reader.
- The Second Reader reads the piece carefully, comments on the piece,
recommends acceptance or confirms rejection, and forwards the submission back
to the Artistic Director;
- The Artistic Director forwards submission to Genre Editor.
- The Genre Editor reads the piece and the previous editorial comments thoughtfully and carefully,
then recommends acceptance or confirms rejection. The Genre Editor also reviews and edits the
comments of the first and second readers, and crafts the final message to the author incorporating all editorial comments. The piece is returned again to the Artistic Director;
- The Artistic Director forwards the submission to Editor-in-Chief.
- The Editor-in-Chief receives the submission from the Artistic Director,
reviews/edits Genre Editor’s comments, and makes final determination:
acceptance, rejection, or request to see the submission in revised
form.
- The Editor-in-Chief forwards piece to Artistic Director with a final
recommendation.
- The Artistic Director reviews comments and responds to author.
