About PHS

"Polyphony is a find. An eclectic collection of prose and poetry, it's like nothing else around. It's lik a Paris Review for the young. Daring. Provocative. Exhilarating. And just plain fun."

-- Alex Kotlowitz
author of There are No Children Here
In March of 2005, Paige Holtzman, a student at The Latin School of Chicago, and Billy Lombardo, a teacher at The Latin School introduced a new national literary magazine for high school writers. The mission of this magazine, called Polyphony H.S. - a combination of a Greek term meaning many voices, and the abbreviation for High School - is to seek out the finest high school writers in the country, to work with them to become better writers, and to exhibit their fiction before a national audience. We hope to promote the highest standards of writing and contemporary literary art among students of various backgrounds, experiences, and schools. If there is another magazine like this one in the country, i.e., a professional quality, national literary magazine for high school writers, edited by high school students from private and public high schools, we are unaware of it.

We met as a staff for the first time in August of 2005, invited 361 schools, at least 5 schools in every state, to submit fiction to be considered for our 1st issue.

From all sides, the inaugural year for Polyphony H.S. was a success. Not only do our editors invite high school writers to submit their work for professional publication, they give editorial feedback to the authors of every manuscript submitted, and they participate in a dialogue with accepted authors in an effort to strengthen each piece. The students and faculty from schools with which we've work have offered testimonials championing PHS and our editors' efforts.

Independent Teacher on-line magazine has published an article on using PHS in the creative writing classroom, and ISACS has accepted a proposal to make two presentations at the 2005 ISACS convention this November. Skyline newspaper also published an article on PHS. Recently, Rick Kogan of the Chicago Tribune and WGN Radio has invited its founders to present the magazine on WGN Radio this fall.
